Scuba Diving Lessons & Trips
If you have always wanted to learn how to scuba dive, or become a certified scuba diver, you can do so in San Juan del Sur by taking lessons at the Scuba Shack, the scuba diving and water sports activity center located right on the beach. Their professional instructors will teach you all the proper fundamentals in a swimming pool and then take you out for ocean dives around San Juan del Sur. Licensed scuba divers can rent all necessary equipment and book diving trips with the Scuba Shack crew on their private boat.

Tree Canopy Tour
Da Flying Frog is a well priced, adventurous activity that takes about 4 hours. Located behind San Juan del Sur in the foothills, a network of 17 cables makes its way down the mountain, connected to huge trees with wooden platforms on each. All you have to do is strap in your harness, put on a helmet, and enjoy the adrenaline rush as you make your way down the mountain. The longest cable is approximately 350 meters, allowing you to appreciate the amazing views and tree canopy while zipping down the mountain. This activity is suited for all ages from 7 years and up.  Da Flying Frog is open Monday thru Saturday from 8am until 4pm, closed on Sundays. Make sure to call ahead for a reservation. They will pick you up at your hotel and drop you back off afterwards. The canopy tour costs US $25 per person.

Horseback Riding
For just US $10 per hour you can saddle up and ride a horse through the foothills and valley behind San Juan del Sur. Operated by Da Flying Frog canopy tour, you will ride along side experienced cowboys from the Palermo farm, where these cowboys look after over 600 head of cattle. Operating hours are Monday thru Saturday from 8am until 4pm. Sunday rides may be made available at a higher rate, and depending on availability.

Sailing
Spend your day aboard a private, 42 foot sailing boat with delicious catered foods, open bar, and a professional, experienced captain and crew as they sail you south of San Juan del Sur to a deserted white sand beach. Dive in to the emerald green waters for a swim or go snorkeling, and enjoy your day with other travelers from around the world. Evening sunset trips are available as well.

Hiking
There are a couple of fun day hikes around San Juan del Sur.  Always bring water and sunscreen.

  • Lighthouse Hike:  The lighthouse is located on top of town’s southern headland.  The hike to get there takes about 2 hours round trip.  Walk to the south end of town to the main port gait.  Go through the gate and into the port.  Near the new building there is another gate where the trail starts.  Follow the trail up the hill, fork right and keep going until you reach the lighthouse.
  • Port Hike:  At low tide you can walk and rock hop out past the port to the southern tip of the bay.  Keep an eye on the tide.  Walk through the port and keep heading along the water.
  • Cross Hike: looking towards the north end of the bay, high in the hill you will see a large white cross. After hiking to this view point, you will have a 360 degree view of town, and the ocean, spanning up the coast and down to Costa Rica. During the dry season you can walk across the river mouth on the beach into “La Talanguera”, the beach front neighborhood on the other side of the bay. Go one block off the beach and take a left. You will come to the gate for Pacific Marlin, a residential community. Hike up this hill until you reach a “T” in the road. Go left and about 100 meters further on your left, you wil see a very steep driveway with steps going up on the side. We recommend doing this during the day, as part of the hike is steep and can be dangerous at night.
