Promote a sustainable future for the local environment, economy and socio-culture of San Juan del Sur by providing information that enables people to make conscientious and responsible decisions while they are visiting, living, and investing in Nicaragua. 

How you Can Practice Sustainable Tourism in Nicaragua

Understand and Respect the Local Culture
--Travel with an open mind: cultivate the habit of listening and observing; discover the enrichment that comes from experiencing another way of life
--Prepare: learn the geography, culture, history, beliefs, some local language; know how to be a good guest in the country or culture

Understand your Social Impact
--Buy locally made products when you can
--Interact with local residents in a culturally appropriate manner
--Do your best to avoid making promises that you may not be able to keep (such as sending photos, money or gifts)
--Instead of giving money to beggars, donate to an organization that is helping to improve the quality of life in Nicaragua. 
--Ask permission before taking photos of people, homes, and events.

Understand and Minimize your Environmental Impact
Insist on following these guidelines even if they are not practiced by the locals.
--Do your best to avoid buying or eating products made from endangered animals or plants (sea turtle eggs and shark fin soup are two examples). 
--Trash disposal presents a huge problem in developing countries such as Nicaragua, please do your part and assure proper disposal of all trash and human waste.
--Use your own shopping bags and refillable water bottles. Plastic bags are the largest source of litter in Nicaragua, so if you don’t need one when you buy something at the store, do your best to avoid taking one.
--Travel in small, low impact groups.
--Buy beverages in reusable glass bottles instead of plastic bottles or aluminum cans. Nicaragua does not have plastic or aluminum recycling facilities yet.
--Do your best to turn off the air conditioning, lights, and fans when you leave your hotel.
--Do your best to rent the most fuel efficient vehicle that is practical for your needs. 
--Take advantage of airport shuttles and public transportation whenever you can.
--Become aware of and support projects benefiting environmental conservation and communities
